From talking to older people across the city, we know that transport and access issues are one of the main causes of isolation – a problem that isn’t made easier living in a beautifully hilly city like ours.
This project links together people aged 50 and over to work together where transport and access issues in communities are the main causes of isolation. This could be help from someone to leave the house, building confidence to use a mobility scooter, or support with access to public transport.
Some Access Ambassadors will also look to solve local travel issues in communities, and feedback any potential solutions with transport and access to the relevant organisations.
People aged 50 or over can take part in this project either to volunteer as an Access Ambassador, or by working with an Access Ambassador.
Interested in being an Access Ambassador?
We need volunteers to join our Access Ambassador team. As an Ambassador, you can also get involved in reviewing the transport provision in target areas, and work with local communities to identify solutions. You will be given all the training and support you need to help participants.
Need help from an Access Ambassador?
Do you struggle to get out of the house on your own? Would you benefit from a volunteer supporting you to walk around your local area? Maybe you need some help to use transport more confidently?
This is not just about accessing transport – our Access Ambassadors can give you whatever support you need to get you out of the house and engaging with other people.
“Although I’ve never felt isolated myself, I still wanted to be able to go for a walk in my street. The Access Ambassadors are helping me continue to ‘be active’ by accompanying me when I go out. I would encourage everyone to get involved – they will help you to do as much or as little as you please to help you gain confidence and get out more.”
Nora, age 101
