Making Sheffield a city we’re proud to grow older in.

The third Age Better in Sheffield Neighbourhood Toolkit has officially launched in Sheffield’s Firth Park ward. The toolkit has been informed by and co-designed with local residents of all ages, and is being posted to 7,000 homes in the area over the next few weeks.

Age Better in Sheffield is a cross-city, six-year partnership funded by the Big Lottery Fund and led by South Yorkshire Housing Association. The project works with people aged 50+ to reduce isolation and loneliness across the city, and to help make Sheffield a city we can all be proud to grow older in.

To create the neighbourhood toolkit, Age Better in Sheffield teamed up with local residents to explore what it’s like to grow older in the area, and to identify the support, activities and information that will encourage people in Firth Park to connect with others and live life to the full.

Inside the envelope there’s a map of the ward (which includes Parson Cross, Longley, Southey, Wincobank, and Firth Park), complete with bus routes and a whole host of places and projects for people to learn about and visit in the area. A dry wipe whiteboard, pen and magnet are included so people can plan some weekly activities using the map. There is also a collection of postcards championing local people of all ages, and a freepost return card so people can get in touch with the Age Better team.

Hannah Thornton, Communications and Toolkit Officer for Age Better in Sheffield, said:

“Often, one of the reasons people can stay feeling lonely is because they don’t know about the opportunities that are available in their local area – but it doesn’t have to be that way! The toolkits are a brilliant chance to reach individuals in their homes, and to help people reconnect with their communities.

Our biggest hope is that people interact with the toolkit and consequently feel inspired to do something differently, whether it’s attending a new group, chatting with someone on their local park bench, or encouraging someone else in their community to give something new a try.”

On Friday 28th September, everyone is invited to join Age Better in Sheffield at one (or both!) of their toolkit events. The first one will be taking place at Asda on Chaucer Road (S5 8NH) between 10am and 11:30am, and the second will be taking place at First Start centre in Firth Park (S5 6HH), between 2pm-3:30pm. Come along to have some refreshments, and to find out more about Age Better in Sheffield, the toolkit, and local services in Firth Park.

Age Better in Sheffield are now preparing for their fourth and final toolkit in the Woodhouse ward. Anyone wishing to take part in any of the Age Better projects, wants to find out more about the toolkit, or would like to find out more about the programme, can do so by contacting Age Better in Sheffield on 0114 2900 250, by emailing agebettersheff@syha.co.uk, or by visiting www.agebettersheff.co.uk/toolkit
