Talking Bench Celebration Event

Join us to celebrate the opening our new Talking Bench in Graves Park, and to enjoy a host of activities from dancing to cycling and mindfulness

By Hannah Thornton · September 13, 2021

We are very excited to be hosting a celebration event to launch a brand new Talking Bench in Graves Park!

Sheffield was the first city in the UK to launch a Talking Bench, with the Winter Gardens revealing theirs in 2017 in response to a growing sense of loneliness across the UK. A Talking Bench is a designated spot where people can sit, enjoy the view, and open themselves up for a chat with friends or with strangers.

Join us between 11am-2pm on Saturday 18 September to enjoy a whole host of activities including the official opening of the new Talking Bench, dance sessions with award winning dancer Charlie Armitage, mindfulness sessions with Mindful Living, workshops to learn more about how to have meaningful conversations that connect with Thinking Environment expert Sophie Stephenson, and cycle rides round the park on Rhubarb or Ginger – Sheffield’s famous trikes from Cycling Without Age.

Absolutely everyone in Sheffield, of all ages, are welcome to join this free event and enjoy the activities.

Free cycle rides with Cycling without Age will be taking place throughout the entire event between 11am-2pm, and the rest of the activities will be as follows:

11:15am-11:45am – dance session with Charlie Armitage
11:45-12pm – official opening of the Talking Bench
12pm-1pm – mindfulness sessions and conversations that connect workshops
1pm-1:45pm – dance session with Charlie Armitage

We are so excited to finally be launching our Talking Bench after so many months of social distancing and not being able to join together. We can’t wait for the many conversations that will take place in front of the beautiful pond in Graves Park, and would like to encourage everyone to come along this Saturday. We know that the impact of the pandemic is still very much influencing people’s experiences of loneliness and isolation and our event will be a chance for people to join us in a safe outdoor space to enjoy some chats, to reconnect, and to try something new with some friendly faces.
